My Therapist Broke Up With Me (And The Unexpected Lesson It Taught Me)

Feb 20, 2025

When my therapist of ten years told me she could no longer see me, I was floored. Therapy had been my safe space, my sounding board, my place to unpack the chaos of life. And suddenly, it was gone. No warning, no gradual goodbye - just a decision that left me reeling.

At first, I spiralled. Had I outgrown therapy? Had I failed at healing? Was I just too much? But as I sat with discomfort, something clicked. This was not an ending. It was a test.

Processing the Breakup

I’ll be honest, I took it personally at first. When someone you trust suddenly steps away, it’s easy to assume you’re the problem. But once I calmed down (and stopped overthinking it to death), I realised something huge: *This was the moment to trust everything I had learned over the past decade.*

Therapy had given me the tools. Now, it was time to use them.

The Power of Your Network

Losing my therapist forced me to take stock of the people around me - the ones who lift me up, challenge me, and keep me grounded. It’s easy to lean too much on one source of support. But true resilience comes from having a network, not just one lifeline.

I started reaching out more. I had deep conversations with friends, leaned on my business mentors, and let myself be vulnerable in ways I hadn’t before. And I realised: I wasn’t alone. I’d just forgotten how to lean on my community.

The Rock Analogy That Changed Everything

A friend shared a simple analogy that stuck with me: imagine life is a river, and problems are rocks in your way. Some are small pebbles you can step over and others are massive boulders that force you to change course. But regardless of their size, the water keeps flowing.

Losing my therapist felt like a boulder. But I wasn’t stuck; I just had to find a new way forward.

Your Turn: Take One Small Step

If you’re dealing with a change or an ending that’s thrown you off balance, here’s my challenge for you: Take one step today.

Send the message, make the plan, do the thing that’s been sitting in the ‘too hard’ basket. You don’t need to have it all figured out - just move forward.

Therapy may have ended, but my journey? It’s just getting started.
